The 2025 Arizona State Domino Championship

The 200 Player Preliminary Rounds

The Preliminary Rounds consist of 7 matches, where all 200 players will compete in individual head-to-head games. This format ensures that every player gets multiple games and that standings are determined by skill and consistency, not elimination luck.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Players will be randomly paired in Round 1.
  • After each round, starting with Round 2, players will be paired based on their win/loss record.  For example: players with similar records (e.g., 2–0 vs. 2–0, or 3–2 vs. 3–2) will face off in the next round.
  • Players will not face the same opponent more than once during the 7 Preliminary rounds. Each round features a new matchup based on win/loss records.
  • All players compete in all 7 rounds. There is no eliminations in the preliminary phase.
  • Format: Head-to-head (1v1). First to 150 points (3 Houses) wins.

Determining the Sweet 16

At the conclusion of the 7 preliminary rounds, the Top 16 players with the highest number of match wins will advance to the Sweet 16 Championship Bracket. Players will be ranked according to the number of wins from 1-16. In the event of a tie, the following tiebreakers will be used:

  • The first tiebreaker is total points scored over all 7 rounds. Each time a player earns points in a round (and receives chips), those points are added to their cumulative tournament total. At the end of the Preliminary Rounds, the player with the highest overall point total (chip value) will receive the higher seed.
  • The second tiebreaker is total point differential, calculated by subtracting the total points a player has allowed from the total points they have scored (based on chip totals across all rounds).
  • The third tie breaker is as follows for qualification into the top 16 Finals only. If two players are tied for 16th place, they will play a head-to-head playoff match (race to 100 points). If three or four players are tied for 16th place, they will play a multiplayer playoff game (race to 100 points). The winner of that game will claim the open seed. If the tie is only for seeding order (not qualification), the tournament director may opt to use a Bone Draw to determine final placement.

The Sweet 16

Players are seeded #1 through #16 based on their final Preliminary Round standings.  #1 plays #16, #2 plays #15, and so on. All finals matches are played head-to-head (1v1). First to 200 points wins.

The Final Four

After the Sweet 16 and Quarterfinal rounds are completed, the four remaining players advance to the Final Four, where they will compete in the semifinals and the championship match to determine the winner of the tournament.

In the Final Four, players will compete in a best 2 out of 3 head-to-head (1v1) series, with each game played to 200 points. All standard tournament rules remain in effect. The first player to win two games advances to the next round or, in the case of the championship match, is declared the tournament winner.

The Rules and Procedures

STARTING THE GAME

STARTING THE GAME

STARTING THE GAME

  • At the beginning of each match, both players must wash (shuffle) the dominoes together to ensure a fair mix. Each player then draws 7 dominoes to form their hand. The remaining dominoes are placed facedown to form the boneyard, which will be used for drawing during the game as needed. This also happens after a locked board.
  • Players must play the hand they are dealt. Even if a player receives 4 or more doubles, the hand must be played as drawn.
  • The game begins with the lowest double. If neither player has a double, the player holding the lowest overall domino starts the game.

KEEPING SCORE

STARTING THE GAME

STARTING THE GAME

  • To ensure accurate scoring throughout the tournament, players will use colored chips to represent their points.
  • Each player will receive chips as they score. Chips are distributed immediately after a valid scoring call, and must reflect the exact point value earned that turn.
  • Players get their own chips upon scoring.
  • Blue chip = 50 pts
  • Red chip = 10 pts
  • White chip = 5 pts

SCORING

STARTING THE GAME

PLAYING YOUR DOMINOES

  • Players score by making the open ends of the domino layout add up to any multiple of 5 (e.g., 5, 10, 15, 20, etc.).
  •  After placing a domino, if the total of all open ends is a multiple of 5, the player must call out the score and is awarded that number of points (chips).
  • A player must score at least 10 points in a single turn to get on the board. In other words, it takes 10 to get on board.
  • A player must score at least 10 points in their final play to win the game. In other words, you can’t count 5 to win, you must get 10 or more, to win.

PLAYING YOUR DOMINOES

PLAYING YOUR DOMINOES

PLAYING YOUR DOMINOES

  • Once a bone touches the board face-up, it must be played. The player has the option to play it, on either side of the board. Once it touches the other domino, it is considered played.
  • You must announce your score aloud after each scoring play.
  • If a player incorrectly calls their score, they do not lose points, but they also do not receive the correct point total for that turn. So no points can be awarded in this case.
  • If a player fails to call points that were available on the board, those points are forfeited. The opponent may not claim them, and play continues as normal.

BOGUS PLAY

PLAYING YOUR DOMINOES

DOMINO FINISHING RULE

  • If a player makes a bogus play, such as placing an illegal domino, the play is voided, the bone is returned to their hand, and they must play a bone that fits or draws from the boneyard.
  • In addition to the above stated consequence, the player will also receive a verbal warning. If a player does this for a second time, during the entire preliminary round, then the player will forfeit the particular game being played. Further violations of this rule will lead to disqualification.

DOMINO FINISHING RULE

PLAYING YOUR DOMINOES

DOMINO FINISHING RULE

  • When a player goes out by dominoing, they must correctly count and clearly announce the total point value of the dominoes remaining in their opponent’s hand.
  • No points will be awarded if the announced total is incorrect or not called at all. Example: If the opponent’s remaining dominoes total 22, the correct announcement is "20" (since only multiples of 5 are scored). If the player says "20" — they score 20.
  • If the player says nothing or announces incorrectly — no points are awarded.

LOCKED BOARD

IDENTIFY YOURSELF

IDENTIFY YOURSELF

  •  If the board becomes locked and neither player can make a move, both players add up the total pip value of the dominoes remaining in their hands. The player with the lower total is awarded the full point value of all the dominoes in their opponent’s hand. But, it must be counted and announced correctly.
  • If a player dominoes or locks the board but has not yet reached the 10-point minimum to get on the board, they do not earn points from that action alone.

IDENTIFY YOURSELF

IDENTIFY YOURSELF

IDENTIFY YOURSELF

  • Players will create a nickname to identify themselves, which they’ll write on a name tag at check-in.
  • This nickname will be used throughout the tournament; for match pairings, leaderboard standings, and all official announcements.
